Cruising along the Turkish west coast. When we arrived to Alacati west of Izmir we were tired of beating against the northerlies and turned back. The trip back was very slow with visits in most of the big bays. 868 nm. Winter harbour again: Finike

Winter in Finike

There were many Swedes in Finike during the winter. We just managed to find a seat for the 12 present in mid December for Swedish "Lucia" celebration Saturday evenings there was a pub with a dart tournament. Very polular Visitors from Sweden in November. The weather was much better than in Sweden

Ancient places

Not much was left of old Troy but the visit gave a clear impression of the importance of this city thanks to its position on the entrance to the Dardanelles. The picture shows the original city wall (about 1400 years before the Trojan war) Pergamon was in a class equal with Efesos but had been "robbed" of it´s valuables several times. Mark Antonius emtied the library with 200000 volumes which he gave to Kleopatra as a wedding gift. A German dismounted the complete Temple of Zeus which now can be seen in Berlin Heracles went to the underworld through this entrance to capture Cerberus. I would like to get a glimpse but had no desire to meet Cerberus so I didn´t go far down

Istanbul

The Bosporus was narrow with two lanes for shipping but the largest ships needed both lanes. We had to go close to land with the advantage of a little weaker current Haga Sofia from the sea The Bosporus was lined with beautiful houses

Black Sea

We have never seen so many dolphins as in the Black Sea. On the other hand we only met three sailing boats in three weeks. Two of those were old acquaintances. There were no service for pleasure crafts in the harbours we visited. That was however no problem. When we needed water in Amasra we went to the city hall and explained our problem. An hour later a tank truck from the fire brigade solved it. Kelken Adasi had a new, nearly empty harbour. There we med lovely Turkish youths and a fisherman who sold us two kg of crab claws for €4. So we had an unexpected seafood party

Marmara Sea

Esenköy is a sleepy little town with normally few boats in the harbour When the fishing season started on October 1st there was not room enough for all boats.

We stayed long on Avsa Adasi who had:

  • a new almost empty harbour
  • no harbour fees
  • a good wineyard and restaurant 200 m from the boat
  • beautiful walking paths

Inland visits

In order not to miss interesting places inland we used train and buses. In Eskipazar we ended up in a local "carnival" Safranbolu, which is a World Heritage site, is situated on the Silk Road. Cinci Hansiin on the picture was an inn for travellers and their camels Inside a colonel´s house in Safranbolu a couple of hundred years ago
